Between 2000 and 2010, its population grew by 55%, the 24th-fastest rate of growth of any county in the United States. Conroe is the county’s seat of government, and The Woodlands is its largest town. Other communities include Willis, Pinehurst, New Caney, Panorama Village, Shenandoah, Patton Village, Woodbranch, and Cut and Shoot. Montgomery County has become a recreation destination for many Houston residents. The area, with its abundant lakes and forest, offers numerous opportunities for hunting, boating, fishing, and hiking. Among the most popular attractions are the Sam Houston National Forest, W. Goodrich Jones State Forest, Lake Conroe, and Lake Woodlands. Visitors in the area are also attracted by the shopping opportunities in Conroe, the annual county fair, and the Cajun Catfish Festival held in Conroe in October.
